Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Dt250 Charging Problem, diode test, good shape

Question
Hey I have a 1974 Yamaha dt250. I believe I've narrowed down my charging
problem to a bad lighting coil. I did a diode test on the rectifier and it
appeared to be in good shape. I noticed some of the wires on the lighting coil
were melted together. I have another lighting coil, but am not sure if it works
or not. Would it be wise to switch them out just to see if thats the problem?
I'm only 15 and don't have a job so I'm trying to get out of this situation
kinda cheaply. Thanks for you help!

Answer
Matt,

-if your coil wires are melted that is a problem.
-Be sure it is not just varnish that they
coat the wires with, it can look bad sometimes.
-The wires on the coil have to be insulated from
each other or it creates a short that cuts
down the output of the coil.
-If your other coil looks okay, it might be
worth a try. Check it for continuity before
you install it. The resistance or ohms will
be very low.
-Does your flywheel magnet seem okay?
-Check the wires going to the rectifier for
any breaks or bare spots.
-is your battery ok, fuse good?
