Motorcycle Repair: Starter issue, honda cx 650, starter solenoid

Question
I have a 1983 Honda cx 650 custom. When I go to start it the starter just clicks like it is trying to turn over but does not have the strength to turn over the engine.Every now and then it will turn over and start but that is a rare thing.I pulled the starter off and it will turn or spin when out of the bike.I also installed a new battery and the issue remains. What do you think could be my problem. Thanks Bryan

Answer
Bryan,

-if you find your starter solenoid near the
battery, it has two bigger cables on it.
One goes to the battery, the other goes
to the starter.

-Temporarily connect these two terminals
with a heavy jumper.
and see if the starter works every time.

-If it does, the solenoid is likely faulty.
-If the starter still won't go, check
your battery, connections and finally
rebuild or replace the starter.

-When you push your starter button,
you should be able to hear the solenoid
click every time. If you don't hear it
click, it may be faulty but
you can also check for power coming
to the solenoid on the smaller wires
when you push the starter button.
The small wires activate a magnetic
switch in the solenoid which in turn
connects the two bigger posts, this
sends the battery power to the starter
motor.
-there is also a starter clutch under the
rotor, it usually makes more noise
when it is bad, the starter would slip
and rattle.
