Motorcycle Repair: 1982 suzuki gs550L, 1982 suzuki gs550l, 5k ohms

Question
Hi Wayne,

Jeremy again. The previous problem was the battery. I exchanged it and charged the newer one. Now that the battery works, the bike starts right up no problems. However, after turning the bike off, it won't restart until it cools down. My guess is the coils are faulty because there is no spark in the plugs when warm. My question is, how do I test a coil to make sure it is the problem? My Suzuki has 2 of them. I want to know how to check them. I do have an amp/volt/ohm reader.

When the bike does run however, I played with the idle screw and I can't find the right combination for my bike to idle correctly. I can get it as low as 1100 RPM and when I come to a stop in first gear, the bike bogs below 1000 and then cuts out. Would this have to do with the coils as well? I appreciate your time and energy trying to answer any of my questions. You truly are helpful.

Answer
Jeremy,

the coils are usually between
2.4 - 3.8 ohms on the primary coil
wire and 13k - 18k ohms on the secondary
or plug wire with the cap off.
Caps are usually 5k ohms or less.
Seems odd both coils would quit
at once, do you have points or
an ignition pulser unit?
Is your starter turning fast
enough when warm?
Weak spark may affect your idle
or plugged idle jets.
