My baja 250 lost all spark after the kids said they went through a water hole . I have replaced the spark plug & coil still no spark .I pulled the side cover off of the internal coil and found oil in side of the housing it coated every thing could that be the cause of no spark or is there suppossed to be oil in there as i work mainly on old sleds and all internal electrical is dry sumped .What else may cause no spark as when it first quit it back fired was restarted and back fired then quit no spark since

Answer
Les,

-this likely uses a CDI ignition system consisting
of a magnetic flywheel or rotor and
an exciter or charge coil under the flywheel.
-Also a pulse coil somewhere around the flywheel as well.
-Then you have your ignition coil and spark plug.
-There is a switch or kill button wired
in to ground the system and stop the ignition.
All this runs to a CDI module or box that handles
all the work.
Some bikes have a bit of oil in the rotor/coil
cover, so I can't be sure that is a problem.
I have requested a service manual from Baja so
I will see if they respond.
The manual may have ohms settings for the pulse
coil etc.
You could check all your grounds and connectors
for moisture. Try a multimeter on the
pulse coil, could be 200 or 300 ohms.
The charge coil should be grounded and likely
has little resistance.
The CDI module can rarely be checked, only replaced.
Check your kill button or disconnect it temporarily.
Plug caps are around 5000 ohms.
Dry the bike out in the sun and blow out
any moisture in connectors, wiring.
