Motorcycle Repair: 84 Harley, harley xlx, harley davidson xlx

I need to know how to replace the Clutch cable on an E84 harley XLX 1000. When I go to put the cover back on everything falls out and I have to start over.

Harley did a change on that clutch mechanism
sometime in 1984, I suppose to make it better?

-The only thing I can suggest is attach the
lower end of the cable first after turning the clutch adjust
screw out as far as you can.
-Use some heavy wheel bearing type grease
to help hold things in place while you install the cover.
-Turn the clutch adjust screw in until it bottoms lightly
and back it out a 1/4 turn max and lock it.
-Hook up your upper cable and adjust for
1/8" free play at clutch lever.
