Motorcycle Repair: Honda VF750 Sabre Clutch Problem, honda vf750, v45 sabre

Question
On my 1982 Honda VF750 Sabre with 42K mi I can upshift to any gear, but shifting down can only be done one gear at a time, then about a 10 sec. wait, then next gear.  I cannot down shift quickly through the gears.  I blead the clutch fluid - no difference.  When driving, the clutch engages fine and does not slip.  I suspect that either a master or a slave cylinder is bad.  Is there a way to verify which part is bad without replacing it, perhaps unnecessarily?
Thanks.

Answer
Alexander,

your problem is likely the shifter arm spring broke.

It makes shifting very unreliable as it holds
the shift arm against the shift drum
which moves the transmission forks and gears.

It is under the right side clutch cover and can be replaced
with a bit of work.
