Motorcycle Repair: lazy spark?, spark plug wires, fuel air mixture

Question
I recently picked up a cl175 from a neighbor. I flushed the tank and cleaned out the float bowls and new plugs of course. The bike was running great except for the fact that once it reaches running temp it starts missing and runs like it is only running on one cylinder. It seems as though it is possibly a bad coil once it gets hot.Any assistance with this problem would be great.

Answer
Evan, be sure that you have checked the fuel supply through the fuel petcock. Sometimes, the passages get clogged internally. I use a small drill bit to check them, turning it by hand. Also, be sure that the gas cap vent hole is clear, so you don't get a vapor lock in the tank.

Be sure that there is no gunk backed up behind the float valves, where they screw into the carb body. All jets and passages must be clean and clear.

Check the points, while it is running, to see if there is excessive arcing going on. Gap should be .014" plus or minus .002" Check spark plug caps for excessive resistance and use non-resistor spark plugs. Be sure that the ends of the spark plug wires are in good shape before you screw the caps back on.

Honda coils seldom fail, but condensers can go bad when warmed up or spark plug caps fail under stress. Plugs should be D8HA NGKs, I think.

Combustion temperatures are dependent on compression, fuel-air mixture and strong spark at the right time. Check the mechanical spark advancer for proper function, then set timing so that points open at the F mark alignment.

Hope this is helpful for you and the CL175
