Motorcycle Repair: 78 cb 125 trouble when warmed up, feeler gauge, air leaks

Question
hi
i thought this bike was running perfect until i took it for a decent ride (10 miles+).On the way home bike would not idle or would idle very high .Turning the adjustment screw had litte or no effect. The bike starts and idles fine when it is cold on 2 different carbs that i have for this bike (both cleaned)I have re checked timing and point gap which are all good. The carb gets a good flow of good  gas.Battery is good aswell as spark .Thhe only thing i haven't checked is the spark advance and valve clearance.i tried to get at the advance unit but when i tried to turn the nut the engiene just turned also,as for the valves i just can't figure out where to put the feelers
Anyways the bike rides nice untill it gets hot
The plug is a little tanned but noy too much(also tiny piece white)
Compression was around 155
I hope i didn't leave out any info
thanks in advance

Answer
Eric,

sounds like either a stuck advance unit or
a lean fuel mixture. If you put the bike in
gear and give the wrench a sharp rap in a counter-
clockwise direction, the advance bolt should
come loose. You will have to move the points
plate out of the way to get at it. You might
want to mark where the plate is set.
Make sure the advance turns okay and springs
pull it back also. The advance unit is located on a pin,
make sure it doesn't fall out and align it on
reassembly.

-make sure throttle cable has some free play,
check around the carb intake for air leaks,
make sure air filter is not too oily.
Check the carb slide, make sure it slides
freely.

-The valve clearance has to checked when the engine
is at top dead center or compression.
There is a "T" mark on the flywheel rotor.
The feeler gauge goes in near the bottom
of the access hole, just under the adjustment screw.
You may be able to feel if the rocker arm
is loose by shaking it a bit, it should
be very slightly perceptable. Tight is not
good and neither is too loose.
Should about .002" to .004" maximum clearance.

-if you set the timing with the advance stuck,
you may have to recheck it.

-if all this fails to help, maybe try another
ignition coil or possibly condensor.
