Motorcycle Repair: 2002 yamaha vstar 1100, starter solenoid, model bikes

Question
Hey I recently jumpstarted my 2002 vstar from a car, and now I can't get the starter to turn.  I took the starter off and took it to the shop and they said it looked fine.  I put a new battery in because the old battery had a dead cell in it.  I still can not get it cranked.  I also checked the starter relay and it is working.  What could I do?  Thanks

Answer
Josh, this WAY far away from being a vintage Honda question, isn't it? I have no way of knowing what other components are in the wiring harness of a late model Yamaha. There are generally safety switches in the circuits for sidestand and clutch lever, but I don't know if and where they are.
Use a 12v test light or voltmeter and start at the fully charged battery. Follow the battery lead to the starter solenoid/relay, push the starter button and see if you get power there. Keep going through the starter circuit, until you either get no volts or a ground is lacking to complete the circuit.
Many late model bikes have a fusible link next to the fuse box for any kind of big electrical short circuit issues. Check all fuses and for any other kind of safety relays, etc.

You can always start at the starter motor with a jumper cable from the battery. If it turns over, go to the starter relay and try again. If nothing happens either the relay got fried from all the amps or something happened to the activation circuit.
