Motorcycle Repair: 2000 HONDA XR100R, honda xr100r, honda 4 stroke

Question
Can you give me some advise on setting the valve clearance on my sons xr100r honda 4 stroke bike, I am a car / truck mechanic, have set valves many times but never on a motorcycle. Is it the same just have the cam at the back of the lobe and adjust ? the owners manual says to set at 2 thou when cold , i would appreciate your help.

Answer
Scott... no mysteries here. Bike engines are just little car engines, same principles apply. Put the motor on TDC (T mark on the flywheel) and check the clearances. If the valves are tight, then it is probably on OVERLAP rather than COMPRESSION stroke, so rotate it one more turn and check them again. .002" is the correct cold clearances on these engines.
