Motorcycle Repair: Throttle Response, suzuki gsx750f, vacuum hoses

Question
I have a 1990 suzuki gsx750f katana. The bike starts and idles fine but when i open up the throttle it is delayed before the rpms go up. When i ride it dosent respond how i would like it to. The gas cap is broken and i was wondering if that could affect it. I was thinking that because there would be no pressure in the gas tank? I replaced the plugs and the air filter is new. I took the carbs apart and sparyed them with carb cleaner. I dident really know how to clean them so i did the best i could. Please help. Thanks

Answer
Colton,

-you are partly right in a way, the tank does
have a vent, but it is to let pressure
out and air in. It is on the left when sitting
on the bike under the tank somewhere.
Make sure it is not plugged.

-Make sure battery cables are clean and tight.

-Also, see if the gas tap or valve has a good
flow of fuel to the carbs. If it has any filters
inline, replace them. There may be a screen
or filter on the valve inside the tank
where it attaches.

-if you had the carbs off, you may have an air
leak somewhere on the intake, check where the
carbs connect to the engine and make sure
no vacuum hoses are loose.

-your carbs may have rubber diapragms on the slides,
they are under the top covers on the carbs.
they could get holes in them, line up
the rubber tab on top with the carb if you have them out.

-if the plugs are light brown color that is good,
black is too much fuel, and light or white is not
enough fuel. See if they tell you anything.
Good to check them after a quick run and shut
down quickly, don't let it idle.

-main jets in the center of the carbs or the
jet tubes under them could be plugged.

-a compression check might be a good idea too,
all the cylinders should be close to the same
reading. 150-180 psi is acceptable.
It's no use trying to tune it up if the compression
is low on any cylinder.
