Motorcycle Repair: trouble starting when hot, check air filter, battery cables

Question
i have a 1982 honda shadow when its cold it will fire right up but if i ride awhile and the motors hot it turns over slow and sometimes backfires if i leave it cool it fires right up also after it starts seems to run ok little miss

Answer
Todd,
is your bike a 83? I think that's when
the Shadow was first manufactured.
Anyway, I think possibly the problem
is related to heat. Is the cooling
fan coming on when hot? If not
check the fan and fan sensor on the bottom
of the radiator.
-Try new spark plugs, make sure the battery
is fully charged, important for good spark.
The plugs should be light brown or tan color.
-Lastly the ignition pulse generator unit
on the left end of the crankshaft can break
down when hot. Coils, fuses, wiring, connectors
are possible suspects. Check for
loose battery cables or corroded connectors.
-If your spark plugs are black you may
have excessive fuel problems,
check air filter, choke, carbs,
tank vent.
