Motorcycle Repair: CBR1000F transmission, honda cbr1000f, bill silver

Question
I have a 1987 Honda CBR1000F hurricane.  I can only get the bike into what seems to be 3rd or 4th gear.  do i need a whole new transmission or can i just fix part of it.  also can i buy a transmission from a newer CBR1000 model and it work in my bike?

Answer
Jared, I would start with the shift selector parts, first, which should be under the clutch cover. Check BikeBandit.com for illustrations under the OEM parts search function. Honda changes their bikes constantly, so I would doubt that any really new bike transmissions will interchange.
Until you get into it and see exactly what is wrong, it is hard to say what the cheapest route for you will be.
If this happened all of a sudden, then it may be that some small part has broken. If you got it that way, then someone else may have broken something severely. No way to know until you pull it apart somewhat. Check the oil for signs of debris or filings.
You can always fix part of something that is failed, but sometimes if you are lucky, you can find a whole good used transmission at a wrecking yard for a fraction of the cost of buying new parts, if they are still available.
