Motorcycle Repair: 1984 Yamaha Virago 1000cc Engine Problems, 1000cc engine, battery cables

Question
When I am riding my bike down the highway at about 65 or 70mph the engine tends to surge for a short while and then it won't happen again for a month or 2. But recently it surged a lot and quit on me going down the road but my bike would start right back up and run fine for a few miles then repeat this. A week later it ran just fine. It is never consistent except for it only happens at higher speeds.

Answer
Kyle,
since the bike restarts and runs okay for a time,
and it only happens at high speeds,
I suspect the fuel and or air venting systems.
Check your gas tank vent as this can plug
up and restrict fuel slowly as it creates a
vacuum in the tank.
Check for fuel flow from tank and replace
the fuel filter.
Make sure battery cables are clean/tight.
there is no easy fix for intermittant problems,
if you check the fuel system thoroughly
then at least you can narrow it down.
Lastly the ignition control unit or TCI
may have bad solder joints or ignition pulser
may be acting up when warm.
The pulser is cheaper to replace.
