Motorcycle Repair: VT700C turn signal replacement, hex head, rear fender

Question
Hello,

I have a 1984 Honda shadow 700 (VT700C).  The rear turn signal rubber mounts have dried and cracked and I cannot figure out how to remove the old mounts.  Inside of the frame through which the mount extends there is a plastic protector that partially unscrews and barely exposes a nut, which I am assuming must be turned to remove the old mount.  This plastic protector quickly runs into the rear fender.  I have removed the wiring and bulb/housing.  I have removed the remnants of the original rubber mount exterior of the frame.  An 18mm hex head is observed.  This hex head has a cutout on one side through which the wires pass.  The hex head is thin, only about 1/16 inch.  I don't think this has any significance since it was molded in the original rubber housing.  Thanks in advance.
