Motorcycle Repair: Long term storage, long term storage, petcock

Question
Do you have any tips on long term storage? I have an 01 FXSTD & an 82 FLH, because of working away i will be storing them for 3 to 5 years. The garage is heated during winter months. Thanks.

Answer
First, get a battery tender for the batteries. This will keep them charged. Start the bikes and let them warm up to operating temp and change the fluids. Once you have that done, start the bikes, shut the petcock off and let the carb run out of fuel. Fill the fuel tank up all the way. cover the bikes with some type of breathable material. Dont use plastic, it will hold moisture.
Good luck and happy riding
