Motorcycle Repair: 89 VT600C engine/oil issue, plug holes, check oil

Question
On the way back from a day trip, my engine started making more of a racket than usual, then it died.  The starter sounds like it's trying to engage the engine, but the engine isn't turning over.  I've heard that some bikes have a sensor that shuts the engine down when there's too little oil it won't friction itself to death.  Is this true for my bike, and if so should my problem be solved with a little 10w 40?  If not, any ideas as to what I need to do next?

Answer
Matt,
was the bike out of oil? It may have seized the
engine if so. If the starter can't turn it
over, it may be beyond adding oil.
You can try adding some oil through the spark plug
holes and try turning it by hand gently.
If you can get it to turn over and add some oil
maybe you will get lucky. Otherwise
it may need to be disassembled to find the problem(s)
Check the top end, pistons etc for signs
of seizure, check oil pump.
