Motorcycle Repair: 03 HONDA xr50, honda xr50, carburater

Question
Im having trouble getting this bike to start.  I cleaned the carburater, got a new spark plug, and changed the fluids.  Sometimes it doesnt even start up, but other times it will start but wont idle correctly and it will die. Its a 2003 but my buddy told me he hadnt used it for like 3 yrs.  It does have an after market air filter on it, but when i switched it out with the original it didnt seem to make a difference.  Could the ignition module be bad? I know this isnt exactly your area of expertise, but any advise would help!  THank you.

Answer
Alex,
have you checked for a good flow
of gas from the gas tank?
Idle jets are small and need to be cleaned
physically with a small wire.
Is the compression good, or have you checked it
with a gauge?
Check valve clearance, about .002" intake and .004" exhaust
When it doesn't start check for spark, if it has
spark try some wd-40 in the carb intake, see if it
fires. This will tell you if it is lacking fuel.
If no spark, likely pulser coil or CDI box is bad,
check kill button also.
