Motorcycle Repair: 1972 Honda SL125, plug cap, timing chain

Question
I purchased a 1972 Honda SL125 cleaned the carb real well and it started first kick! I bought a re-build kit for the catrb, installed it. I also tightened the timing chain and replaced the points. It started first kick and idles and runs in the end like a dream. when I get on it it breaks up. I dont know if it is starved or flooding but it is frustrating the heck out of me. Can you help?

Answer
Robert,
sometimes reading the spark plug can indicate
the problem. Black=rich, whitish=lean, tan=good.
You can adjust the carb accordingly.
Double check your points, if the camshaft
is loose at all, the points can bounce resulting
in bad running. Unfortunately the camshaft
runs in the head without bearings. Often they
wear and need either a new head or maybe
some kind of bearing inserts.
Try some different point gaps and see if it helps.
Check the spark plug and spark plug cap also.
