Motorcycle Repair: Too much fuel in the carbs, honda vfr, 2 quarts

Question
Hello =)

I just got an 86 Honda VFR 700F, and after a carb cleaning and rebuild, here's what's happening:

Fired it up, blue smoke coming out the exhaust pipes.  I figure oil is burning somehow.  I checked the oil level a day after I put in the specified 3.2 quarts, and the oil gushes out the dipstick hole.  The oil smells like fuel.  Somehow there is so much fuel that I believe it is leaking down the cylinder walls and mixing with the oil.  I checked the float needles in the carbs, and they all seem to work fine.  I couldn't blow air past them, and the rubber is still soft on the tips.

My other thought was that the fuel pump (which is not the original one meant for the bike) has too much pressure, and is pushing too much fuel through the carbs, and with the vibration of the engine, the fuel is leaking past the float pins.  I'm picking up a new pump, but if the problem continues, do you have any other ideas?

Any help you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much!

Answer
Bill,
most cycle fuel pumps are fairly low pressure,
like 3 lbs or so. A new pump may help,
but I would also check the gas tank for
any plugged vents, on the tank or cap.
Sometimes pressure can buildup in the tank
forcing fuel out the float valves.
