Motorcycle Repair: Dry Clutch, dry clutches, dry clutch

Question
Hey Mike,
My mechanic is repairing my tranny and he's telling me I need a new clutch.  I'm wondering if he's trying to fleece me.  Its a dry clutch (open primary belt).  The clutch basket is filled with oil cause it leaked from the tranny.  He says that since its a dry clutch, and that it got flooded with oil, its all garbage, and I need a new one.  Is this true??

Answer
Alot is going to depend on how much oil its on it. Alot of the older harleys had dry clutches with oil in the primary. They would get oil on the clutches and slip. usually I would just remove them and gently bead blast them and they would be good as new. You can also use emery cloth on them to do the same thing
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
