Motorcycle Repair: 1978 Honda 750K, clutch systems, clutch springs

Question
I have just recently bought a 1978 Honda CB750K. I finaly got it to run. I also figgured out that the clurch is slipping. I have worked on clutches on cars, is it the same concept? And how do i know if it is a problem with all the clutch plates or just one of them?

Answer
Hi Brandon,

Get a copy of the repair manual (service manual) and learn about inspecting and measuring clutch plates and springs.

Generally, if metal plates have a blued or discolored appearance they are warped and must be replaced.

Fiber plates are measured in three places around the circumferance of the plate. Inspect outter perimeter tangs for defects and wear.

Springs are measured for their free length (overall length without being compressed). Springs are also compression tested, but I doubt you have access this special tool.

Always replace clutch springs and both plates as a set. Otherwise, the old worn parts will quickly wear new parts.

Auto vs. MC clutch systems vary. MC clutch systems vary, too.
