Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Honda CB900C intermittent problem, honda cb900c, square boxes

Question
This motorcycle usually runs great, but occasionally will cut-out and die.  It will barely restart and acts like only 2 cylinders are firing.  Then all of the sudden it will pop and run great again.  The gas tank filter has been cleaned and has fresh fuel. It has only 9000 miles on it and has new spark plugs.  Everything looks like new on it, but it has this problem intermittently.  This happens only once out of every 3 or 4 times that I ride it.
Thanks.

Answer
Steve,
Have you checked the gas tank vent?
If it is plugged it will not let
fuel flow freely.
Open the gas cap and see if you
hear any pressure release. Do
this when it quits.
Honda has time-out circuits in it's
transistorized ignition to prevent damage
when the battery is low. Is your battery and
charging system working well?
Keep the battery charged well.
Cutting out when warm is often the
pulser coils in the engine side case.
They put out a pulse of about 1 volt,
but are hard to test because they
quit as they warm up.
Usually the spark units will quit or
cause problems at any time if faulty.
They are little square boxes near the battery.
Lastly the ignition switch base can
loosen up and cause problems.
It can be hard to find these intermittant faults.
