Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Yamaha Maxim Not Starting, trickle charger, cylinder compression

Question
I just bought my first motorcycle almost a month ago.  It was running fine until about two weeks ago, and it did not seem to want to start.  I figured that the battery was bad and replaced it, which seemed to work fine for a week.  Then it again failed to start.  I just had a chance to hook it on the trickle charger, and charged the battery, and yet it still doesn't want to start.  It turns over, but it is high pitched, and doesn't seem to be getting fuel.  Any help that you could give would be great.  Thanks for your time!

Answer
Tim,
It sounds like it turns over a little fast.
You might want to have the cylinder compression checked.
Make sure the gas is on, kill switch off,
and the spark plug(s) are good.
Maybe the starter is slipping, it may not
be turning over at all. Have you checked for spark?
What size is the engine? If it's a Maxim 400,
it is likely dirty carbs.
