Motorcycle Repair: valve timing, cam lobes, forward side

Question
I have an '85 Kawasaki ZN1300. The cam chain tensioner failed during a start and the cams jumped timing. I have sent for service manuals but not received them yet. When the #1 and #6 are on TDC the cam sprockets have the dimple aligned roughly toward each other at the deck height on the top of the head. (The exhaust cam jumped about two teeth retard)I have read on the internet about having the dimple on the exhaust cam on the FORWARD side to index it properly. Which is correct? dimples toward the front of the engine or toward each other?

Answer
Bill,
the dimples usually go away from each other or the
intake back, the exhaust forward.
Just look at your cam lobes, when the engine
is TDC on #1, the intake and exhaust lobes
have to be up so compression is possible.
See if the marks are near lining up then.
The older ZN's had a supplement manual also
which may help, check with kawasaki.
