Motorcycle Repair: no start/ backfire, suzuki katana 600, 2001 suzuki katana 600

Question
Hi, I have a 2001 suzuki katana 600. I just pulled the bike out of storage from the winter, I put the battery in it and the bike fired and ran just fine for 2 or 3 times. I went out there again and the bike just cranked and cranked then started backfiring. I put in new spark plugs and presto i was back in business no problems starting or running for another 2 or 3 times, then back to not starting and backfiring. I cleaned the plugs, air filter and drained the gas, replaced with fresh 93 octane, and still the bike is acting the same, before this the bike always started and ran perfect never had any problems, please help (Gas is too expensive to put in my truck)  thanks in advance-  Jason

Answer
Hi
If it runs ok off and on I would suspect the ignition
not the carbs. Sometimes the starter can draw too
much current away from the ignition system.
Try a charger/boost and see if that helps.
Make sure the throttle springs are closing the throttle
all the way. Is your compression okay?
Lastly, could be a bad coil. Try a bump start as last resort.
