Motorcycle Repair: Problems starting in cold a Katana 600, gasoline additives, levers and linkages

Question
Hi, i recently bought a katana 600 but im having dificulties starting it in the mornings, the weather is not much cold about 55, i turn the choke up but id doesnt seems to work it only moves about 3/4 of an inch, what would you recommend to start it up. I'm able to clutch start it and the battery seems to be working ok.

Answer
Hi David,

3/4 of an inch is about the distance most all choke levers and linkages travel.

If the engine is hard starting, maybe the fuel in the carburetors has varnished and is obstructing the pilot and enrichment circuits in the carbs. This is the number one complaint & repair in MC repair shops.

If so, the carbs (and entire fuel system) will need to be inspected and thoroughly cleaned to restore performance. Avoid using gasoline additives. They may damage the carbs and will not disolve the obstructions.

I return tech information files by email. There was no email address with your question as requested and explained in my instructions.
