Motorcycle Repair: Clutch friction plates, clutch friction, wet clutch

Question
QUESTION: My 1984 FXEF 1340 Fat Bob has a clutch problem.  I let the bike sit for 6 months without touching it. I took it out and the bike fired right up, however, when I pulled in the clutch and shifted into gear the bike died.  I opened the side plate which shows the clutch plates and I noticed oil in the bottom of the case.  Since there is oil does this mean it has a wet clutch?  or is it normal to find a small amount of oil?  If it is a wet clutch and if the oil dripped out would that cause the wet clutch to malfunction?
If you could answer these questions I would appreciate it.  Thank you for your time and energy.
ANSWER: you have a dry clutch. the oil you found is the oil that lubes the primary chain. This oil is pumped by the oil pump and goes back through a tube to the oil tank.
What has happened is sitting for that length of time he clutch plates got sticky. You can remove them and rough them up with sandpaper
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: Hi, in reference to the oil I found under the clutch friction plates.  My bike has a belt primary and the oiler was removed and/or bypassed. I really don't have a lot of knowledge as far as R&R on a Harley so if maybe you could give a quick lesson on removing the clutch plates I would appreciate it. Thank you

Answer
Since you are running a belt I would check and see where the oil is coming from. It would either be the motor seal or the trans seal.
To remove the clutch. remove the adjuster nut and put s washer on the shaft and put the adjuster nut back on and slightly tighten. this will keep the springs from coming out. remove the nuts that hold the plate on and slide the front plate off. Now you can putt the clutch plates out and clean. Put it back together and adjust the nuts evenly to 1 3/16 from the front of the plate to the back of the plate
Good luck and happy riding
