Motorcycle Repair: Broken fuel inlet L-joint, plastic elbow, tap tap

Question
Hi Roy,

My Keihin carb (93 FXDL) originally had an injection molded two-piece plastic/brass fuel inlet L-joint.  The plastic part, which the fuel line attaches to, is now broken off the knurled brass tube which goes into the carb body so that assembly needs replacing.  According to the HD parts guy, the replacement part is now solid brass.  Yeh!

Q1) Is there an at-home method for removing the old press-fit brass tube?

Q2)  Can the new part be installed by tap-tap-tapping it in or does it have to be "pressed" for some good reason?

Thanks, Tom

Answer
Yes the old plastic elbow fitting has been superceded by an all brass fitting which won't break like the old plastic ones.  You can tap the old one, thread a small bolt into it and use a slide hammer to pull it but I recall the last time I did one I just put the end of the old fitting in a vice and pulled the carb off carefully.  The new fitting you CAN just tap in but make sure you set it at the right angle first so the fuel line will clear the carb and the rear cylinder fins and be aimed straight towards where your fuel line comes down.
