Motorcycle Repair: 02 Softail Standard 9000 miles backfires out carb, stock air filter, harley shop

After a long run when bike is heated up from time to time it will backfire through carb when coming to a stop light. I have had it back to the Harley shop three time and still no solution just three large bills ! Have any ideas?

I don't get it.  You payed them 3 times and they haven't fixed it?  Call the regional Harley rep.  What did they do?  And is it a backfire or a cough back through the carb?  Is your idle speed set too low?  Is it too lean on the low speed jet?  Do you have the stock air filter or a hi-flow K&N style? What kind of exhaust?  Are you using hi-test gas?  Is the carb bowl clean of sediment?  Is the mixture screw set at 2 1/4 turns out?  What do the plugs look like?  Have you checked the carb boot and intake boots for air leaks?  Are your pipes tight at the cylinder heads?  All of these can cause the problem.
