Motorcycle Repair: Oil Line Removal Tool, plastic retainers, heater hoses

Question
2001 Softail (FLSTF) Twin Cam - I am going to change my starter and was looking at requirements to remove oil tank. This is the part of the job that concerns me the most. The HD Service manual specifies a specialty tool for removing plastic fitting at end of oil lines. Is the specialty tool the same as either the ones used in the automotive fuel lines or heater hoses? I assume the threaded steel fittings to the oil pump do not even require removal? Do the small chrome covers where the oil lines connect at the oil tank slide back to reveal plastic retainers there? Can supply line at bottom of tank be removed without cutting clamp as stated in HD service manual?

Answer
You don't need a special tool.  And you don't need to remove the oil tank to remove the starter.  If you remove the battery and remove all the mounting bolts and the center support bar between the tank and the rear cylinder you can remove the starter.  You do have to remove the primary cover to get at the jackshaft bolt.
