Motorcycle Repair: Gas tank problem, radiator shop, gal tank

Question
Hi,
I have a '98FLSTF. I have had a problem with sputtering for years. I have taken the bike to shops and dealerships with no clear answer for a reason. Last summer I took it to a shop and asked them to drain the tank and look inside. There were huge pieces of some foreign material. It is my understanding that HD used to coat the iside of their tanks with a material that is known now to slough off. Do you know of any recourse with HD? My understanding is that the only fix is a new tank.

My second question: when I change my tank, I had been considering a larger tank. I am looking at the 5 gal tank from HD. I had been told that due to the angle of the tank, there is about a gal of fuel that will not be utilized. I will still get the same mileage. The last gallon doesn't make it to the cross over. Do you know anything ablut this?

Thank you

Answer
Being how your bike is 9 years old, Harley will probably not do anything about fixing it. You can take it to a radiator shop and have the inside coated. this is what I do in my shop and it costs around $40.00.
If you change your tank you can get a aftermarket tank alot cheaper than a harley tank. I have never heard of a 5 gallon tank holding a gallon of gas when it runs out.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
