Motorcycle Repair: oil in the air filter, rocker boxes, mechanical experience

Question
I was on a long ride, I jumped on the interstate 75-85 mph
for 25 miles, when I exited the freeway I had lost about 1.5 qts of oil It had run out the air filter all over the engine. I cleaned the filter refilled with oil, I still had 20 miles to home. Same thing happened 10 miles out. Had to tow. Thanks for any help. 01 Roadking 88ci 29000 miles

Answer
Your return pump is not scavenging the oil out of the crancase fast enough and it's blowing out the top end breathers into the air filter.  Or, your umbrella flaps inside the rocker boxes are shot.  Pop the covers off the rocker boxes first to look at the umbrellas.  If they look ok then it's the oil pump.  Sometimes this can be fixed by just setting the oil pump alignment.  You loosen the oil pump mounting bolts and insert the alignment pins, tight up a few bolts, remove the pins and reinsert the last bolts.  In some cases I've had to replace the oil pump itself.  Unfortunately the oil pump job is really for someone with twin-cam experience who has done this before or someone with mechanical experience who can follow a service manual and buy the alignment pins from HD or from JIM'S.  You MUST use the alignment pins to set up the pump correctly.  Good luck.
