Motorcycle Repair: 1980s Honda XR100R, dirt bike, hot wire

Ok, i bought a 1980s Honda XR100R Dirt bike from one of my friends. It was missing a Carborator, air filter, and had the wiring messed with. we got the parts needed for it but we are having trouble with getting fire. we found the hot wire and hooked it to the coil and we only get fire a few times, i need to know if i will be able to fix the the coil and get consistant fire or will i have to replace the coil?

Do you have a copy of the service manual?

I have a difficult time diagnosising such problems in this media because I cannot see the parts you are working with and the work that has been done.

I cannot tell if the correct wire is used for the ignition coil, etc... I would need to be there to inspect the wiring and perform a few tests.
