Motorcycle Repair: Gas mileage, mount victory ohio, gas milage

Question
Mike, I have a 2002 FLHTC carb bike.  I am was not at all happy with the gas mileage so I had the carbs re-jetted.  Prior to that my jets were 45 slow and 190.  I was getting about 33 mpg.  I had them changed by a HD mechanic to 45 slow and 175.  Initially, I was getting 40-42 mpg.  Then it has dropped off to about an even 35.  I have done nothing else to the bike (motor-wise or exhaust).  I am not a hard rider and seldom "get on it".  I know of other riders who have around the same year and bike as mine and their mpg is lots better.........45 -50 mpg.  What would you suggest.  I am in Columbus, Ohio area (for elevation purposes).  Where in Ohio is your shop?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
I am located in Mount Victory Ohio. About 50 miles from you. Just north of Marysville.
Your milage is going to depend on the weight of the bike, weigh of the rider, speed of riding and gearing of the the bike. Lowering the main jet will get you better milage on the freeway, but not in the city. Your bike doesnt run on the main jet till about 3000 RPM. If you want better milage you should change the sprocket so your running lower RPMs when riding. You can also add a 6th speed so that your running less RPMs on the hiway. Lowering the main jet might have made you run a little lean whice will lower your gas milage.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
