Motorcycle Repair: SL 125 tunning, camshaft bearings, point gap

Question
Hello again I am working on a 1970 SL125 Honda KO and I was wondering if you had the specs for valve clearance, point gap, and also I was working on the clutch and I was wondering how far do you screw in the four screws that hold on the springs and the plate. If you can help me on these items I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer
Stephen... SL125Kos were 1971 models, but yours may have been made in late 1970, it that is what it says on the frame sticker.

Valve specs are .002" COLD on the compression stroke for both valves.

The point gap is nominally about .014", but these engines have a tendency to have loose camshaft bearings, so the cams move around, which directly affects the point gap, which directly affects the ignition timing. The points should just open when the crankshaft marks are on the flywheel's F alignment with the stator. If you can move the end of the camshaft/spark advancer around side to side, then the static timing is only going to be in the ballpark somewhere. Be sure that the camchain tensioner is adjusted properly to help keep the cam from wobbling too much.

The 4 screws are to be tightened down to where they stop, usually about 4-6 ft.lbs. You can feel when they get tight and just snug them down firmly, but not enough to break them off in the clutch hub. The spring tension is already dialed in, so you can't "adjust" it with the four clutch spring bolts. If you don't tighten them up all the way, they will probably back out and ruin everything in the clutch cover.
