Motorcycle Repair: Apes for FLHTC, cables and wiring, general mechanic

Question
I would like to put 16 inch apes on my Electraglide classic. I realize extending wires, clutch, brake and throttle are necessary, but how do I start this project. Do I need to remove the whole fairing, what else?  Is this even a do it yourself project?

Answer
Wouldn't suggest it if you are not at least a general mechanic.  You only need to remove the outer (front) fairing and in addition to the obvious torx screws there are two hidden ones in the back, just above the bottom triple tree next to the fork tubes.  All the cables and wiring must be the correct final length, routed correctly, and there are too many little tricks to tell you everything.  The gas tank has to be propped up to do the throttle cables.  To change the clutch cable you have to remove the exhaust to get the tranny right side cover off.  If your bike is an 04 or earlier this is the time to get the clutch ramps replaced with the reduced effort ramps to get a nice easy lever feel.
