Motorcycle Repair: front forks, phillips screw, cap screw

Question
I am noticing a little diving in the front end of my bike. I have a '96 Heritage Softail. How do I change the oil in the front forks? I don't have a lift so do I bring it to a shop or can this be done without one? Your help is much appreciated.
Jim

Answer
Don't need a lift.  Just remove the phillips screw at the back of each lower leg right near the bottom.  (Don't lose the copper sealing washer, it's reusable.)  Might need a hand impact driver to break it free.  Take off the top cap of each tube let them drain completely.  When they have drained, hold the front brake and pump the front end to make sure all the oil is out.  Replace the drain screw and washer.  Fill each tube with 11.5 ounces of Type E fork oil or if you want stiffer action use SAE 20 fork oil, Belray or Drag Specialties, etc.  Replace the top cap screw rubber washer and tighten the top cap screw.  That's it.  Fork oil should be changed every 20K miles.
