Motorcycle Repair: 1971 sl175 Honda, bearing retainer, ring groove

Question
want to ckeck bearing on real wheel.  wheel off-took off sprocket- my clymer book shows a bearing retainer with holes in it to back out,  I don't have any of that.  There is a hub with a snap ring groove but it looks like that whole thing is one piece.  there is a rubber seal in the hole, then a gap and then i can feel the bearing.  Bearing feels good but just want to really look at them.  hope you can help

Answer
Charlie.... Clymer books are pretty generic sometimes and not always accurate or specific for your needs, such as this.

Go to www.bikebandit.com and search OEM parts, then drill down to Honda, 1971, SL175, then rear wheel. I got it here, but it may be too long for your browser to click on

Getting the bearing out of the hub can be tricky...
Sometimes the bearings are stuck in the hubs from age, rust, corrosion, etc.
You have to use a long, strong thin punch to get the spacer aside enough to catch an edge of the inner bearing race, in order to start driving it out. Pounding on the bearing race is pretty much guaranteed to ruin the bearing.
If the bearing feels smooth, sometimes you can access the bearing seal and gently pry it out, pack the bearing with some fresh grease and pop the seal back into the bearing.
