Motorcycle Repair: 1974 honda xl350, crankshaft rotation, compression stroke

Question
i have a clicking noise in the top end,,sounds like when the cam rolls past center of the lobe and from the valve spring pressure its taking out the slack in the chain and making a click,,both lobes do it after it rolls off the lobe,,ive tried to adjust the tensioner but still get this noise,,

Answer
Jeff, either the camchain is worn out or you aren't getting the adjustment done correctly. Do the camchain tensioner when the piston is at TDC, compression stroke...
valves will be closed.
Try watching the valve train after you adjust the tensioner, but rocking the flywheel back and forth with a wrench, when some valves are partially open. If the forward and reverse motion of the crankshaft mirrors the valves, then the camchain is tightened properly. If there is a delay or pause while the camchain catches up with the crankshaft rotation, then the chain is still loose, either excessively stretched out or perhaps the tensioner blade is broken or damaged. The only other possibility may be that the camsprocket is loose, but that wouldn't last too long before something goes BANG!

Check out some illustrations of the 1976 versions on PARTSFISH site. Bikebandit.com site doesn't show the camshaft and tensioner for some reason for 1975-76..
