Motorcycle Repair: 1980 Yamaha 650 special 2, yamaha 650, bill silver

Question
I have a 1980 Yamaha 650 special II. Up till now it has been a great running bike. I added an aditional set of lights to the front and now it wont stay running. it ran fine last year and now this year after I recharged the batt. it acts like their is a direct short in the charging system. The lights almost go dead and if I use the turn signals or hit the breaks the bike dies out. I disconected the lights I added and the problem is still their.  Any ideas of what could be wrong. I thought at first mybe the additional lights drew to much power from the charging system to keep up with everything else, but even without them pluged in it still does the same thing.

Answer
Marc, your additional lights may have overstressed the charging system and damaged something..... Being that I am not a YAMAHA expert, I will give you these links, found on Google..

And buy a shop manual for this bike. You will need accurate wiring diagrams and other pertinent info.
