Motorcycle Repair: My vt700, fuel system components, purchase manuals

Question
I had my carbs cleaned and I put it back on, I,m getting a lot of back firing now ,and a couple of plugs are really getting wet now, somtimes I can dry them and it will start ,most of the time it wont work.

Answer
Hi Dennis,

The problem may be associated with more than one cause. The following are common causes:

Improperly cleaned carburetors or not thoroughly cleaned.

Defective carb parts: Carb cleaners can damage parts, parts wear, and parts can be damaged by handling.

Contaminated fuel and fuel system components re-contaminating cleaned carbs. All fuel system components need to be inspected and serviced, not just carbs.

Carb adjustments including synchronization.

Ignition problems:  Includes defective components, connectors, conductors, and water shorting (rain/washing/condensation).

Other problems including worn cylinders and valves, and cylinder compression and valve clearances out of service limits.

You or someone else will have to perform tests to determine the cause(s) and then make changes accordingly.

It helps to have a copy of the service manual. Check your local public library for loaner manuals. Purchase manuals here:
