Motorcycle Repair: Exhaust Header Bolts, flange nuts, header bolts

Question
I am replacing the stock exhaust with Vance and Hines Big Shots Longs on a 2003 HD Heritage Classic Softail.  Can I expect any problems removing the header bolts.  I do not want to break off the studs.  Are they put on with Loctite? Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks, Bob

Answer
They are not loctited.  In fact you should coat the studs with Anti-seize compound before you replace the nuts.  IF they are really rusty (which they shouldn't be on a 2003) spray them with PB Blaster or some rust breaker first.  Then using a 1/2" six point swivel socket (after removing the heat shields) with an extension, try TIGHTENING them gently just until you hear them break loose with a cracking noise.  Then loosen them.  If they are not rusty they should loosen right up. When you put your new exhaust on you don't need to replace the gaskets.  Snug the nuts up evenly, then tight the front pipe flange nuts first and then the rear.
