Motorcycle Repair: 97 Heritage carb tuning, exhaust pipes, dyna jet

Question
I have a 97 heritage with V&H longshots no baffles, kuryakyn hypercharger, SE ignition. Bought it used that way, problem is the occasional bang from the exhaust and pop out the carb and not alot of power for passing or going up hills. I put in torque cones, not a big change but a little. The plugs run black and sooty and the exhaust pipes are pretty sooty also. Not knowing the stock base jetting and where to start compared to whats in the bike now, currently in the carb is 170 main, 48 slow, so where to start? I am thinking of 45 slow, and maybe 165 main, just got a set of baffles to put in also. Am I on the right track?

Answer
First thing you need to do is check to see if you coil is good. A bad coil or plug wires will cause the problem you are having.
Do an OHMs test on the coil and plug wires. You will need an OHM meter. If you need to know how to do the test let me know.
Next I would check the timing. It might be off and causing the popping through the carb.
Now to the carb. I recommend getting a Dyna-jet kit for your carb. It will have to correct jets, its easy to install and will give you more throttle responce.
Good luck and happy riding
