Motorcycle Repair: jack shaft seal, shaft seal, flst

Question
Hey Roy I have a 1986 FLST with an oil leak on the inner primary cover were the starter jack shaft sticks thur. The hole were the seal goes has no shoulder to sit against so when I put the shaft in it can push the seal out, should I try glueing it in place, this looks like a really bad design. Did they change it after this year bike.

Answer
Yes they did change it and put a shoulder in the inner primary.  Just make sure you put the seal in facing the correct way.  Use the Harley seal, I think it's part #12051.  They have a metal or rubber coated metal outside lip so it's a real tight fit and shouldn't need any sealant.  The cheaper aftermarket seals are made of hard rubber only.  Also coat the inside lips of the seal with high-temp waterproof grease before you put the shaft through.  Make sure you install it squarely.
