Motorcycle Repair: tire alignment, stock aluminum, tire alignment

Question
Hi Mike, what is the official word for centering the back tire in the swing arm? I messed w/ the spacers after installing a larger tire, only centering it inside the fender and not to the frame or swing arm, the bike handled awful w/ one up (pretty good w/ two up though). Does it center in the swing arm, or to the frame backbone, or..?  I’ve not been able to find this info in the manual and plenty of web sites but don’t know what is right.
Once centered, I assume I can align the back tire, based on the bearing housing on the front of the swing arm, attaching a rod across the bottom, then measuring back to the axle.
I assume the front wheel is fine but should probably at least check that too while I am monkeying with this.
I had not riden the bike previous to the new tire as I bought it non running etc.so I don’t know how it handled prior to this.
The bike is a ‘79 FLH Tire size is 130/90-16 and 140/90-16 on stock aluminum mags.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer
Actually, you should align the real wheel to the front wheel. The best thing you can use are a floresent lamp. One on each side. lay them on both sides of the back tire running foward to the front tireSince you have two different size tires you can measure the distance on both sides of the front tire. It should be centered. If you do it by the backbone you have to hve the tank and rear fender off. If they are off then you can do it that way.
Once you have that you can then adjust the back tire to the trans. just measure from the back of the adjuster tot he center of the axle.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
