Motorcycle Repair: 1970 ct70, valve stem seals, lapping compound

Question
I used fine lapping compound on the valves and there is still slight seapage. It takes a few minutes before I see a little. I don't think I can get it perfect. And are the springs the same the small one and large spring? What is the length of the timing chain? Is there another way except when the engine is put together for checking a loss chain. I don't think I need to get a new one. Is there a measurement?

Answer
Shirley, it sounds like they are as good as they are gonna get, so put it all back together again. Spring sets are the same for intake and exhaust. Check for the small o-ring/seal ring used as a valve stem seal and replace it.
Some early bikes didn't have valve stem seals, though. You still haven't said if the valves are loose in the guides or not.

Dunno about timing chain links/length. I don't have a shop manual for these bikes. Depends on the mileage of the bike and how it was treated in the past, as far as excessive timing chain wear. Once you thread it all together, the length will hopefully be tensioned by the tensioning system. If the tensioner is all used up and the chain is loose, then it is time to replace it. You will have to remove the flywheel and ignition to access the camchain sprocket and get the chain off and on again, I think.
