Motorcycle Repair: first gear, starter clutch, bikebandit com

Question
I put a starter clutch chain on my 84 cb700sc now when i try to take off in first gear it sounds like the gears aren't meshed and loud grinding and it doesn't roll. but if you take of with no throttle than roll on it real slow it wont do it but at any time you hit the throttle it does it. down shifting into first even at higher rpm's not a problem. any ideas what i did when i put the motor back together? Any input will help. jbird682003@yahoo.com

Answer
Hi Jay,

I cannot accurately say what's causing the problem without knowing more specifically where the noise is coming from.

I would have to look over your shoulder while you assemble the engine to catch an assembly error.

It could be a improperly installed spacer/shim, camshaft timing chain adjuster, or other.

I recommend a tear down (autopsy) to inspect the damages and investigate the cause.

Use the service manual and pay close attention to the parts microfiche. Visit www.bikebandit.com to view parts microfiche on-line.
