Motorcycle Repair: 83 HONDA MAGNA V45 WILL NOT TURN OVER, honda magna v45, neutral safety switch

Question
I HAD THE BIKE GIVEN TO ME IN VERY POOR SHAPE.  IT SAT OUT IN THE WEATHER UNCOVERED FOR A YEAR.  I PUT A NEW BATTERY IN THE BIKE AND PUSHED THE START BUTTON AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT BUT NOTHING HAPPENED.  I PUT A SCREWDRIVER TO THE SOLENOID AND IT STARTED.  COULD IT BE THE START BUTTON ITSELF?

Answer
Allen, couple of possibilities here.... Starter button could be defective on the starter button segment. There are safety safety switches on the clutch lever and I think on the side stand, perhaps, plus the neutral safety switch.
Or the starter solenoid may have corroded contacts internally, from sitting all these years. Test it with a 12v test light and/or amp meter for current draw.
