Motorcycle Repair: 1988 TRX 125 timing (cam)chain replacement, camshaft timing, bike bandit

Question
what all is involved with replaceing the cam chain on a 1988 trx 125?...can it just be replaced?..or what needs to be realigned to assure it is in time?..does it need to be aligned?...can you just put a new chain on and go?..any help is appreciated!

Answer
Hi Cam,

Replacing the camshaft timing chain requires complete disassembly of the engine.

The work is not physically hard, but not recommended for the non-experienced. There are things to know and do properly when performing such work.

I recommend that you get a copy of the service manual and review the procedure for replacing the timing chain.

Service manuals have illustrated procedures, though they may not always be easy to understand and follow. Service manuals are designed for the experienced tech, generally.

Check your local public library for a loaner copy of the manual. Most larger city libraries carry service manuals and they don't mind if the pages get greasy.
